One famous person known wearing a toupée, is Julius Caesar, to cover his baldness, he tried both wearing a toupée, and shaving his head and in some state, Caesar wore his trademark ceremonial wreath to cover his shrinking hairline. Most toupées are produced small and designed to cover only bald areas at the top and back of the head, while large toupées are not are used in larger bald spots of the head. The toupées and hairpieces are associated commonly with male wearers, while some women use hairpieces to lengthen existing hair or as hair extensions, or to cover a partially exposed scalp. A hairpiece or partial wig made of natural hair or synthetic hair to cover up partial baldness or for theater purposes is known as toupée.
